Types of circular saw
Sidewinder circular saws are the most common types of circular saw. The motor on a sidewinder sits either on the left or right of the blade and connects directly to the blade arbour. The most common placement of the motor is on the left hand side of the saw, although there are some right handed placements available such as the Bosch CS5.
Worm drive saws tend to be slightly heavier than sidewinders due to the gearing mechanism. A worm drive saw has the motor is oriented parallel to the blade in and uses a worm gear to power the blade, this has the advantage of increased torque but the disadvantage of a heavier saw. Worm drives are also more expensive than sidewinders.
Hypoid saws are similar in design to worm drives. The difference between hypoid saws and worm drive saws is the gearing system and the fact that worm drives have an oil reservoir that can be replenished and hypoid saws have a sealed gearing system. The Gearing on a worm drive is a worm gear and on the hypoid it is a conical gear. Similar to worm drive saws, Hypoid’s tend to be heavier than sidewinders but offer more torque. Hypoid saws are in a similar price bracket to worm drives.
Circular saws are most often categorized by the diameter of the blade. The most common size of blade is 7-1/4 inch. A wide variety of blades variations are available in this size for cutting a variety of materials including wood, metal and stone.
The power of circular saws is most often expressed in amperage. 15-amp saws are the standard and can power the blade to between 5,000 and 6,500 RPM on a sidewinder saw.
Corded or Cordless
Cordless circular saws tend to be more expensive than corded saws and are great if you are cutting where there is no power available or when you are moving about frequently. Cordless saws are less powerful than corded saws and tend to have smaller blades. Although, due to improved battery and motor design cordless circular saws are continually getting faster and more powerful and many professionals are now using them instead of corded tools.
Most Circular saws come with a carbide-tipped wood cutting blade. This might be OK if you are ripping some rough timber or boards, but there are many other types of blades available for different types of material. You can buy blades for cutting wood, tiles, concrete and even plastic. If you are planning to do a lot of work requiring clean cuts, you should consider buying a blade with more teeth.

Bosch CS5 120V Circular Saw
Bosch is known for delivering power tools that are low in price but high in power, and the CS5 120V 7-1/4-Inch Circular Saw is no exception. Going against the regular right-sided edge, the Bosch CS5 has a hard-to-find left edge for improved line of sight, resulting in better accuracy and safer cuts.
It comes with a 120V motor for superior performance and has a snag-free lower guard as an additional safety feature. With its radical design, powerful cutting performance, lightweight portability and added features, this left-sided circular saw is an ideal candidate for people who are looking for the best in price to performance and features ratio.

When you buy any tools from Bosch you know that they will be well made and robust in their design. The Bosch CS5 is certainly no exception to this, and you will notice just how sturdy the tool is when you handle it for the first time. It is also comfortable to hold and you will be able to control it with ease whenever you are cutting with it.
A closer look at the Bosch CS5
Most circular saws on the market are right-handed as standard, like the Makita 5007F and Hitachi C7SB2. But Bosch decided to make the CS5 circular saw with a left-oriented blade setup. This means that the blade is mounted on the left side to allow an improved line of sight for right-handed individuals.
By holding the circular saw with the right hand, the eyes are naturally set on its left side, for a clearer, unobstructed sight to the line of cut. While the left-orientation will still require you to keep an eye on where you are cutting, you will find yourself spending less time lining it up and second guessing your cuts.
120V motor and 7.25 inch blade
Bosch CS5 120V Left-Sided 7.25-Inch circular saw has a 15-amp motor which delivers a maximum no load speed of 6,200 rotations per minute. This can go toe to toe with different work pieces, from hard 2 by 4s to large plywood pieces and dense particle boards to structural panels with ease.
It also packs enough power for bevel cutting and plunge cutting as well as masonry and metal cutting. While the standard 7.25 inch blade of the circular saw is not all that hot, Bosch has been nice enough to include a 24-toothed carbide-tipped blade.
While it’s ideal for cutting sheet goods and other applications, users may want to replace the standard blade with a 40-toothed blade for cutting down on splintering and produce a smooth edge every time.
No-snag blade guard
The Bosch CS5 circular saw is great down to the blade guard. Unlike old circular saws that have blade guards binding up constantly, the CS5 circular saw offers a no-snag operation, thanks to its advanced blade guard design that works smoothly on any kind of cut.
Other than having a fresh, left-sided design, the CS5 is a straightforward machine and not full of bells and whistles or any unnecessary features. It does not sacrifice safety for any additional features, even when cutting through thin sheet work pieces.
Its featured adjustments make use of levers rather than wing nuts, making them more secure and easier to work on. This will also save you from having to constantly check on the tightness of the wing nut in fears of things loosening up inside and causing accidents.
The Bosch CS5 saw allows for easy transportation as it weighs just a little over 10 pounds. It comes complete with a 9 foot power cord, and blade wrench, and is covered by the company’s 1 year limited on parts and service.
Final thoughts on the Bosch CS5
If you are looking for a low cost circular saw that gives you power and reliability, then the CS5 from Bosch is certainly a good option. There is nothing fancy about this saw, it is simple in its design and does not have too many additional features about it.
But is cuts really well, it’s powered by a good motor and the tool is very durable so you will get a lot of use from it too. Overall the Bosch CS5 is a great budget circular saw that will cut applications accurately and neatly.

Built for the pros, safe for beginners, the Makita 5007F has other safety features aside from its electric brake system. It has a flat motor-housing setup for improved stability as you change the saw blades. It also features a built-in dust blower that clears the cutting line for accurate cuts every time.
To assist you further with all that cutting, the 5007 is integrated with an ultra-bright LED light that keeps the cutting line illuminated. The switch for this option is separated from the saw’s actual trigger to make sure that the blade is on the right track before making the cut. Top it all off with large, clear markings on the bevel and depth scales, you simply can’t go wrong with this circular saw.
Along with the 5007F circular saw, the kit comes with a carbide-tipped, MForce saw blade, blade spanner/wrench, rip fence, and a plastic Makita carrying case. For longer tool life, the Makita 5007F 15Amp Circular Saw is made with an all ball-bearing construction and is covered by the company’s 1 year limited warranty on parts and service.

Final thoughts on the Hitachi C7SB2
This saw is light and fairly easy to handle. It is ideal for taking out on site and is easy to move around and will make your work that much more efficient. It is an entry level circular saw, but it does give you quite a bit of power to work with and you will find that it cuts very well through a wide range of applications. Overall, the Hitachi C7SB2 is a very good bye for the low price it sells at.
