What could be more enjoyable and rejuvenating after a long tiresome day at work other than taking a good shower? Practically nothing, yep.
However, the overall experience wouldn’t be as much fun, if your shower doesn’t work as it’s supposed to, mostly because of a wrong shower head.
Today’s shower heads are not only about function but also appearance and secondary features. A showerhead geared with LED that can change its color to match the water temperature is only one of them. To help you sort through a mass selection of this bathroom appliance, I have made my own list of best shower heads to make your shower great in 2019.
Having numerous different types of shower heads is like having a double-edged sword. For one thing, you’ll be happy to know that you no longer have to be stuck with your old basic shower head. On the other hand, it is not really easy to make up your mind with all those options out there.
Rest assured, though, because in this guide and review I will spell out just about anything I know about various kinds of shower heads. I believe that once you reach the bottom of the list, you will know which shower head that suits you the most.
Wall Mounted Shower Heads
Just like the name implies, wall mounted shower heads needs a standard wall mount to work properly. In terms of the installation number, this kind of shower head is the most common one seen in any basic residence in the west.
The plumbing works required to have it installed are not as many as other types of shower heads. So are the bathroom configuration and water pressure it is compatible with.
This shower head can just be applied to any bathroom. Also in terms of the cost, it is probably the most affordable one in this list. That said, if you are on a tight budget, this one seems to cater your need the most.
So what’s the best wall mounted showerhead, you ask. Well, in terms of value for money, Speakman S-2005-HB high pressure adjustable shower head has a lot to say.
In spite of its lightweight $30+ price tag, this shower head has the same grade and build quality of those installed in hotels.
There are four different finishes that you can choose: brushed nickel, brushed chrome, polished brass, and polished chrome. Note that although it sounds like a metal, this shower head is made of plastic, actually.
Put that aside, it has one notable feature that you’ll love. The patented “Anystream” technology allows you to enjoy any kinds of combination spray. Whether it’s gentle rain or pulsating massage stream that you want, all you have to do is turn the T-handle.
Last but not least, it is equipped with self-cleaning nozzles that makes powerful and reliable spray performances even if your water pressure is somehow lower than standard.
Ceiling Mounted Shower Heads
Basically, there are not any differences between ceiling mounted shower heads and the wall mounted one. It’s just instead of mounting it on the wall, this shower head is attached to the ceiling. I might as well say that it is only a matter of preferences. Some people think that if the shower head is mounted on the ceiling, it’ll make the bathroom look more well-ordered as the tiling on the walls is not compromised. Note that since it is not a standard installation, there will very likely be a good amount of plumbing works involved which means more cost on your end.
One of the best ceiling mounted shower heads is the American Standard Modern Rain Easy Clean Showerhead. Why? Well, can’t you tell? It is manufactured by American Standard. It’s not like I’m a big fan of this brand but the fact speaks for itself. American Standard’s bathroom appliances stand out thanks to their quality.
Anyway, this model has almost everything a good modern rain shower head needs to have. First of all, its diameter is 10-inch which isn’t too bulky or too small. The rigid brass construction topped with polished chrome finish makes a really nice addition to any modern bathroom. Oh, did I tell you that it’s resistant to any tarnish, scratch, and corrosion too?
Needless to say, cleaning spray face will be just another effortless work on the weekend. If there is one thing that will probably put you off of it, it is the fact that the box does not include the arm and flange. You have to shell out more to afford that which is quite a bummer.
Handheld Shower Heads
If you have traveled to some Asian or African countries, you probably know about it. Unlike in most third-world countries, handheld shower heads are not very common here in America. The reason is mainly that the water pressure that we have here is better than that in those countries.
Still, it doesn’t mean that this shower head is a bad deal.
In some areas in the states where water pressure is below the standard, this one is a life-saver. Also, since this shower head is not mounted, you have more flexibility to channel its spray, allowing for more thorough rinse. Given that fact, some manufacturers have made a venture to produce dual shower heads: one is fixed and the other can be hold be hands.
Speaking of dual shower heads, Ana Bath SS5450CCP 5 function handheld showerhead is among the select few that stand out in the market today. For starter, the package has included everything you need to get it up and run; from the 60-inch stainless shower hose, 3-way diverter mount, to the five adjustable functions that help you save a few more bucks for an additional valve.
Needless to say, you can also save more on water bill by adjusting the right functions for the right needs. The functions range from saturating spray, bubbling spray, massage spray, and the combination of the three.
The shower head and handheld shower can be turned on simultaneously without decreasing the water flow. You must make sure it is set on the strongest stream, though, which is massage spray function. One thing I am not quite fond of is it looks rather bulky with its both 5-inch shower head and shower handheld.
Taking a shower under pouring rain after doing all the chores at work does sound very appealing. That’s why some of the major brands like American Standard started to offer rain shower heads. Due to its commonly large size, some models need to be mounted on the ceiling.
Anyway, if your bathroom space is rather small, this is not the right shower head for you. As you can imply from its name, this shower head is meant to spray water to cover a large enclosure. Needless to say, it requires a strong water pressure, making it rather difficult to be installed on rural areas where water pressure is low.
One rain shower head that easily deserves a top spot is Moen S6320 Velocity. Don’t be mistaken for its small size. Although its diameter is only 8-inch, it packs an advanced technology that enables it to self-pressurize the water, allowing the stream to come out three times stronger compared to other shower head in its class.
Needless to say, if your house suffers from low water pressure, with the aforementioned technology this shower head is more than able to deliver a refreshing shower experience.
On the downside of things, it is only capable of performing two functions namely, rain shower and a concentrated rinse. Still, I guess that’s not much of a bummer since people who look for a rain shower head only need one thing and that is a shower experience that nears bathing in rain. Anyway, it comes with four different finishes: chrome, antique bronze, oil-rubbed bronze, and brushed nickel.
LED Shower Heads
Now if none of the aforementioned shower heads can impress you, you might want to take a look at this one. LED shower heads are for those who like to have a flashy shower experience. With its everlasting LED lights, you practically turn your bathroom into a dance floor. In some more advanced models, the LED lights correspond to the water temperature that flows out of the shower head. Best thing of all is these LEDs are not like any others. They do not emit heat when the light is on, allowing them to last much longer than common LEDs.
Sounds quite interesting, right? Well, if you’re looking to give it a shot, I’d suggest you go for MagicShowerhead SH1026.
The main reason I recommend it is because of its very low price tag. LED shower heads are relatively new, so it’s best to try on the low-end model first before upgrading to the better and more advanced one. Anyhow, this shower head is capable of showing off seven different colors. It doesn’t correspond to the water temperature like I said before. Rather, it’s just random fading. Still, I guess that’s enough to make you feel like a rock star in the 80s. On top of that, the LEDs run on the water pressure. You don’t need any battery to keep it flashing. Also, the chrome finish disguises the cheap ABS plastic it’s made of, so I think that’s pretty nice. Last words, at less than 20 bucks, you can’t expect it to actually work for two years.
Shower Heads with Speakers
One good thing about singing in the bathroom is that no one can judge you, even if you sound more like scaring rather than singing. If you live up to that idea, then you will definitely love shower heads with speakers. The features offered to the market vary, depending on the price tag it comes with. Some cheaper models only come with an AM / FM radio. A number of decent models provide you with Bluetooth connectivity allowing you to stream your favorite music from iPhone, iPod, and similar gadgets. The most advanced models offer a Wi-Fi connectivity for more versatile use, like streaming sports news audio.
One of the top picks in this category is KOHLER K-9245-CP 2.5 GPM Moxie Showerhead. It is an intermediate model that is geared with Bluetooth connectivity, able to work up to a distance of 32-feet. You can stream your music from any devices you want as long as it is still within the coverage. The speaker has its own battery so you have to charge it every now and then. Speaking of charging, the waterproof speaker comes off and on quite easily which is nice.
Believe me, the last thing you want to do in your bathroom is struggling to take off a costly speaker of a showerhead. Anyway, you might not need it but just for your info, the speaker can be used independently, in or out of the shower, so long as the battery still has enough power in it. Other than that, it is pretty much a regular shower head with one function and standard 2.5 gallon per minute spray.
Filtering Shower Heads
Now if you are one of those people who concerns so much about health, you’re going to like this. Chlorine filtering shower heads came up in the recent years with one main offering, which is to take out all the chlorine and other impurities of your water. It can be extremely beneficial too for those living in an area with hard water problem. Mind you, excessive exposure to chlorine may lead to unhealthy skin condition. On top of that, chlorine build-ups in the bathroom can be quite smelly too. Not to say that it can clog the spray face too.
Interested already? Well, I found that Culligan WSH-C125 filtered shower head is a pretty satisfying deal. It does not require a huge investment before hand and it does a very good job in filtering the water. The shower head is complemented with anti-clog spray nozzles which are made of rubber. The filter capacity is very large too, which is up to 10,000 gallons. Additionally, there is this nice Teflon tape in the box. It is used to install the shower head in less than ten minutes with no additional tool. You simply have to wrap your old shower arm with the tape and attach the filtering head. There are five spray settings to choose from which is a nice plus value. You can set it to full-body spray for thorough rinse or invigorating pulse for a refreshing massage after a hard day at works. The 5-year warranty might not sound too good but hey, this thing costs less than 50 bucks.
Novelty Shower Heads
If you want your children to take a shower regularly without you always reminding them, you are going to need novelty shower heads. Its cute cartoonist appearance may add some more fun factor to the overall kids shower experience, saving you from the hassle to get the kids to the shower. Most of this type of shower head is hand-held and unlike adults’ handheld shower, this one comes with a blatant plastic hose. That shouldn’t be a problem, given that kids don’t really care about the stainless look. Oh, the hose is easily detachable too, so you can quickly unplug it when your kiddo has finished with his/her bath.
Disney hasn’t much ventured on this whole shower head thingy, so there aren’t really many choices in this category. The one I found quite appealing for children is Rinse Ace 3901 My Own Shower Children’s Showerhead. It has this funny looking green half-duck and half-dolphin handheld shower that supposedly can entertain kids of young age. The handheld can be connected easily to your old shower head using the 3-foot hose. The hose can be detached easily after shower time is up and you can store it in a safe, just in case your child will sneak back in to get another shower when you’re not around. Keep in mind that it doesn’t come with any safety valve that can stop water stream when it gets too hot. So, you’d better make sure that your shower’s faucet handle is equipped with a mechanism that can prevent scald. The last thing you want to happen to your children is when the fun bath turns to a horrible disaster.
